Mark's pond

Building a pond with a liner

Mark lives in Gloucester UK and is building a pond using a liner. We are hoping to follow his progress and look at the problems he encounters, and how he solves them.
Due to work commitments Mark can only progress the work at week-ends.
It is hoped that this article will prove useful to anyone considering or starting a pond, and if you live in the UK and are presently building one like this, or perhaps recently completed one why not share your ideas and explain how you did things differently or overcome any problems you found. If you do not have access to digital images you can send me photographs and I will scan them and return the photos.

The concrete collar in place
The photo above shows that the pond has been marked out, a trench has been dug out for the concrete collar, and the concrete has been poured. It is important to use some type of shuttering in the trench on the side where the liner is going to be placed as then you have a relatively smooth and flat surface. The size of the pond is 13ft x 10ft.
It will be seen that the walls of the pond have been sloped to support the walls because if they are vertical there is always a danger that they will collapse even when the pond is full of water.
TIP. This method of building a liner pond using a concrete collar is very popular for any pond which is not deeper than about four feet deep. If it is five or six feet deep, and this is recommended for a true koi pond in the UK, then there is a danger of the walls collapsing later in the pond's life depending on the structure of the soil, and especially if we have very hot or heavy rain for prolonged periods. It is then recommended that you should use walls made of concrete bocks.

It will be noticed that there is a lot of water at the bottom of the hole and this will be looked at next.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
