Pond construction

Alan's pond - Fibreglassing

The first step to fibreglassing a wall is preparation the wall should be rendered and be totally dry and lightly sanded.
I was recommended to coat the wall with G4 before applying the resin as this would keep moisture from attacking the resin from behind. I then pre-cut all the mat to length allowing for a 6" overlap at the top and the bottom. I applied a lot of resin to the wall with a soft roller and laid the mat on top as shown and gave a final trim. This piece was laid over the edge of the last by about 2".
I then wet out the chopped strand mat with lots more resin.
A different roller that was solid in construction was used to roll out any trapped air as can be seen in the next picture.
Air was removed with a steel paddle roller.
All the tools and materials and advice came from CWS Ltd who helped me put together a kit list of everything I needed and pre-mixed colour to my flowcoat and generally gave me good step by step advice.
As can be seen the mat is wet with resin and I have rolled over it and the overlapping joint to get all air out before applying my next sheet and you just continue around the pond leaving the floor while last.
Make sure you cut all mat to size dry first even the floor.
The skimmer joint was glassed over and plenty of resin applied as this is a potential leak spot the joint was made by sandwiching the wet mat between the liner flange as well before cutting and folding the excess material inside. Like wise a similar joint was made on the bottom drain.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
