Changing to a Nexus unit - page 1.

The photo on the left shows the filter when the pond was first built 10 years ago in 1993. Since that time a larger filter was fitted and The Answer was fitted recently to replace the brushes.
In the last year Keith had also changed all the media to Kaldnes K1, and he was so pleased with the results that he decided to remove the filter completely and fit a Nexus filter system.
Note that the Answer was fitted in the first bay of the filter as it was too big to fit in the vortex chamber. The smaller models of the Answer were not available at that time.

This photo was taken June 2003, just before the old filter was removed. The top of the vortex chamber can be seen, and the filter is in the top left corner.

When the pond was built valves were not fitted in the pipework from the bottom drain.
Valves were expensive at that time and a plug could be fitted in the inlet to the vortex chamber if the filters were to be isolated. See the schematic drawing.

Now that the vortex chamber was being removed then the water in the pond had to be drained down for a valve to be fitted.

The new Nexus unit was delivered before the work started. These units are very large and do not easily fit into the space used by a previous filter.

TIP. It is always a good idea to have the new filter system on site before starting any digging as then you can ensure the base is installed at the correct height, and the connections are in the best place for the pipework.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
