Pond descriptions

Mark & Ritta's pond

When Mark & Ritta moved to their current house in April 1988, they had an ideal opportunity to design a new system based on the observations they had made with their previous pond. The pond has featured in many magazines and books, including Ripples, Nishikigoi International, and Koi Kichi.
The pond just after completion The pond as it is today
The photograph on the left shows the pond just when it was completed in 1998, and the one on the right was taken 1999.

The filter

This view with the covers removed shows the filter shortly after it was completed.
The media has been changed over the years to keep up with modern koi-keeping and as can be seen in the table below there is Flocor in the 1st bay, Kaldnes K1 and Biochips in the 2nd and 3rd bay, and Japanese matting in the 4th bay.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
