Three sides of the pond will have planted areas against it with soil up to pond level. To prevent moisture penetrating the wall, the outside of the pond shell has been smoothed over with cement. When dry it will be painted with two coats of a bitumen type product.
This is the first of two pictures showing the inner skin of the retaining wall for the raised border adjoining the pond. This is the left hand border (as viewed from the front of the pond). Note the wall ties installed. The wooden posts and crosspieces have been fitted to allow bamboo screening to be erected at a later date. The same bamboo material will cover the pergola to provide shade for the fish.
This is the right hand border and is the area that will also contain a small waterfall feature fed from a skimmer unit. The alternative return for the waterfall can also be seen here.
The return pipes have been installed, covered with insulation and cable tied to wall ties installed on the pond wall. Concrete backfill was then applied to the whole pond perimeter.
This is the cluster of 2” pipes that carry return water some 40ft from the filters back to the pond. To reduce heat-loss they have been wrapped in a foil-backed bubble wrap product and then cable-tied prior to the excavation being filled back in.
This website started with a
booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS
- South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This
is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems
that might occur by following these ideas. It is important
that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules
that may apply.
