Pond construction

Ron's pond 6. Building the walls

The bottom drains and airlines have now been extended close to the proposed site of the filters. The drains are buried at 40” to ensure that a good purging action will take place when the purge valves are opened. This is particularly important due to the long pipe runs present on this system where sedimentation of the pipes is clearly a potential problem.
These photos shows the pond shell almost up to ground level. A damp proof membrane has been fitted behind the block-work which, in conjunction with concrete backfill, will prevent moisture penetrating the mortar between the block and affecting the render and fibreglass from behind. In the right hand corner the deep water return can be seen. This will be fed from a sand filter powered by a 1hp ITT Marlow pump. The sand filter will be used, as it is in the current pond, approximately one day per week for a twenty four hour period before being back-flushed. The feed for the sand filter is independent from the rest of the filtration system. This will ensure that the water clarity remains excellent whilst avoiding some of the well published issues surrounding anaerobic activity in this type of filter. An additional benefit is that it will ‘power-wash’ the base and remove any lingering detritus.
This picture shows the three returns on one side of the pond. The lower return is from the high pressure ITT pump whilst the second mid-water return is the return from one bank of filters. The upper return is a bypass for the proposed waterfall. The return from the second bank of filters is on the opposite wall at mid-water height, also pointing in an anti-clockwise direction.
This shot shows the shell built up to height with the skimmer just installed. The two courses of common brick will bring the pond up to it’s 70” depth at the edge with the depth at the drain being 75”.
The skimmer has been installed and levelled. An Aquamax 10,000 (2000gph) will draw water from this skimmer and return it either via a small waterfall or the high level return visible at the top of this photograph, depending on weather conditions. Ball valves will be installed to regulate the flow.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
