Pond construction

Ron's pond 1. Marking and laying out the pond

The following pages show the construction of a 7,500 gallon pond (approx) in Cheshire. This pond was to be sited closer to the house after it was found that the position of the 'old' pond at the end of the garden made enjoyment of the koi more difficult. The new pond is to be raised to a height of around 2`6" and will be surrounded by a brick wall extending beyond the pond to provide a raised area for landscaping.

Marking out for the pond This picture simply shows the proposed layout of the pond prior to work commencing. The yellow hosepipe shows the actual pond perimeter whilst the channel cut into the turf shows the line of the retaining wall. So far the only real work is related to the destruction of the established border and lawn!

In the above photographs the approximate positions of the bottom drains can be seen, along with the proposed pipe runs. Two aerated bottom drains will feed two separate filter banks located at the back of the garden on the site of the 'old' pond.
Marking out the pipe trench
These pictures are taken along the line of the pipe work runs. In the right hand photograph the existing pond can be seen. As this pond is constructed with a concrete base and block walls the intention is to convert this structure to to a filter house Clearly, the length of pipe runs will require attention to avoid excessive flow and heat loss.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
