A Guide to Modern Koi Pond Construction

Constructing a drains box

There seems to be some confusion on how to build a drains box into the base of a filter housing so this page will show how one koi-keeper did it.

The hole is being dug out for the drais box

The hole for the drain box has been dug out

The hole has already been dug out ready for the filter housing base, and in these two photos the hole has been dug into this base for the drains box.
Concrete is then poured into the bottom of this hole to form the base of drains box.

The concrete blocks now form the walls of the drains box
Close up of the drains box

The walls of the drains box has been built up using 18 x 9 x 4 inch concrete blocks, and the height is so arranged so that it will come level with the filter room concrete base.

The steel mesh is ready for the concrete
The concrete base has been laid
Now that the drain box has been completed the steel mesh has been supported on half bricks, and in the second photo the concrete has been poured and levelled.

The base is complete

The photo above shows the completed base ready to start building the walls. The board and props were added as there was heavy rain and the walls would not be built for some time.

The close up on the left shows that a steel grid has been added so that you can walk on it and at the same time check the pump and the water level.

TIP. It is important that you get a high quality pump as some of the cheaper ones are liable to have problems with the float arm seizing.

On the next page we will look at Pumps & Systems.

This page made up January 2006

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
