A Guide to Modern Koi Pond Construction

Overflow

It is necessary to have an overflow in the system to prevent the water level getting above the designed level. This is usually fitted in the last bay of the filter.

Fig 23 shows a system that was very popular a few years ago mainly because it is fully adjustable, and so you can set it as you wish.

[Drains box] The photo on the left shows a method that is often used by local koi-keepers.
This is also fitted in the filter chamber as the one shown above.
It will be noted that a screw nipple is used to connect to the socket. This ensures that it is still watertight, but by turning the elbow it also becomes adjustable. It can also be installed lower down and a pipe fitted to the correct length.

In both cases the water is discharged to the drains box and so to waste.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
