A Guide to Modern Koi Pond Construction

Pond edging - 3.

[Sketch of pond edging] With fig 16 we have an informal pond fully in the ground, and this drawing shows what is generally shown in the photos below.

[Concrete base]

As the rocks are heavy it is important that the rocks are stood on a concrete base.
The depth of this base will depend on the size and weight of the rocks, and if they are really large then consideration must be given to reinforcing the concrete.
In the sketch the bricks are shown cemented on top of the concrete base, but in the photo concrete blocks are about to be cemented in place on the hardcore, and this method is the one that is normally adapted by most builders.

[Rocks in position]
In this the rocks have been placed in position before finally being cemented in place. You will note that the fibreglass has been extended over the back lip so that no water is lost as the rocks will be slightly submerged.

[The pond edging completed]

This photo shows the pond a few years later from the same position, and now you can see how the gravel has been placed over the lip that could be seen in the photos above. It is very important when doing this to ensure that both the gravel and the rocks are neutral, and that they have no free lime or other substance that could affect the pond water.

We can now start to look at Filter systems.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
